July 2015

A month of never being at home.

As I write this I am beginning to realise why my hopeful aspirations of getting back into my website and sharing lots of blogs about recipes, food and travel with you never really happened. After the amazing trip to Japan, the rest of June somewhat disappeared in a blur.

July was not better, a month of never being in one place. For starters, living in Kent at my folks was taking a bit of getting used to! On the one hand it is amazing to be here, in the countryside, for summer, taking advantage of the open space as Bobbie grew, bigger bigger bigger, the veg patch to raid, eggs always on hand, home made sourdough made by my Moomin, I see how easy it would be to just stay forever!

Work however is in London, so a lot of time is spent organising my life and driving backwards and forwards to shoots. And of course to check on my flat. It started off brilliantly, zipping ahead, the new roof and room upstairs coming along, the kitchen ripped out. Then of course it all goes wrong. Any of you who have done any kind of building works I'm sure will feel my pain. Not spectacularly wrong, but a kind of grinding to a halt wrong. A mix of me not being able to choose things I want fast enough - or refusing to settle for something that is just OK for the sake of speed, plus a few building related hitches. I have discovered I have a pretty good ability to scare the crap out of builders when picking up on things that I don't feel are done to the best standard. turns out I can be pretty scary!

As well as all the to-ing and fro-ing to London I have been a lucky bunny with other fun jaunts in July. A gorgeous 3 days down in Cornwall with one of my fave girls, Kate Whitaker, for OFM, to shoot a squillion yummy breakfasts.

Next up was a trip to Norfolk, to our family cottage by the sea in Brancaster. I think I am as happy here as I can ever be. Home but holiday, if you know what I mean? It was a quite few days, just me and my folks and one of my sisters. breakfasts on the beach, bbqs, dog walks, swimming in the north sea, shrimping for hours and devouring lobsters. The sun did its best and it was glorious.

Batteries recharged I started work this month with the gorgeous Jose Pizarro on his new book, which is going to be a cracker! Such a treat to get to spend days working with him and to top it off a trip to San Sebastian to shoot lots of reportage and food for the book. In true basque style the weather was a bit hit and miss but when the sun came out it sparkled on the sea! The book is being shot by another of my fave girls, Laura Edwards, and we had a right giggle over many glasses of txakoli and cava to celebrate her 30th birthday whilst we were away!

The end of July was a whirlwind of a hen party that I organised for my dearest friend Cat at 7th Rise in Cornwall.

The brain child of Thom Hunt, 7th rise bills itself as the ultimate stag weekend, but who says that's not for girls!?  Deep it the woods it is a weekend of foraging, rabbit skinning, canoeing, fishing, shrimping, campfire cooking and as much drink as you can carry down the steep hill.

We were the inaugural hen party staying at 7th Rise, thinking about it, we may also be the last as well... lets just say I think we broke them. The guys, Matt and Andy, who were our guides, instructors, chefs and hosts were incredible. I think if you asked them what it was like to have a fly on the wall spot on a hen weekend the answer might be "no comment". Despite the fact that we destroyed them so utterly that I had to cook breakfast for everyone on the Sunday because some peoples hangovers were too all consuming, they did an amazing job. Let the wedding dress we took and left for futures stags to enjoy, remain as testimony to an incredible weekend.

And then July was over, disappearing into a haze of stormy rainy weather, summer speeding away.

June 2015

Japan! Bento boxes and beyond.

Right at the end of May we embarked on the most incredible wonderful edible journey of a lifetime. Three weeks in Japan! I can't tell you how excited I was about this trip! I had spent months carefully planning where to go, to stay, to eat... mostly to eat - this was a trip that was ALL about eating and gardens. Two of my most favourite things in the whole entire world.

The trip came about because my dear cousin Tom has moved back to Tokyo and we couldn't pass up another chance to go and visit him. I had a feeling (rightly so) that Japan is just better when you have someone on the inside, speaking the language and able to help you penetrate what is an undeniably mysterious country.

To say I fell in love with Japan would be an understatement. I arrived not knowing what to expect, some kind of blade runner-esk out of body experience and found instead a country and culture of such beauty and generosity, of otherworldliness and in many ways, familiarity.

Of course I should have written about it at the time, and for anyone who wants to know more, about the places we went, ate, stayed, I am only too happy to share.  But for now, in retrospect, I am just going to give a picture diary of some of the places we visited.

TOKYO

Cosy apartments, Omotosando koffee, doughnuts in the parks, iris gardens, the city at night, hidden away restaurants you could never find without help, illegal photos of amazing street food, beers on the roadside, the start of a tofu journey to love, eyes with everything, first bowls of ramen, so much yakatori, crack of dawn starts for the worlds oldest and most famous fish market, fish fish fish, queuing at dawn for sushi breakfast, an absence of pictures of the best meal I have ever eaten, bizarre accacia bonsai   competitions, matcha tea and cat cafes.

HAKONE

The first of many bento boxes and their amazingness, bullet trains, Ryokan, Kaiseke eating, Onsen, views of mount Fuji, walking the Eddo road, blisters, my first mochi, the most refreshing and well deserved beer in the world, earthquakes, rain and glorious sunshine.

KANAZAWA

The newest shinkansen in Japan, staying in the old town Geisha district, Imperial gardens, iris walks, kimonos, missing out on an amazing tempura restaurant, peace and tranquillity at the Samurai house gardens, red bean paste ice cream, Kendo, long walks for amazing gyoza, zen, teh most incredible food hall in the land, beautiful bento boxes with gold leaf sushi.

AINOKURA

The smallest oldest mountain train, green tea greeting, serene beauty, gassho zukuri houses, the warmest family welcome, home cooked food on an open fire, wandering the mountains, clensing rain.

TAKAYAMA

first taste of cold soba noodles, forests and graveyards, beware of the bears, cooking with our hosts, so much food, hidden gem of a bar with vats of chilled sake, not brave enough for karaoke, incredible breakfast, offuro, flying fish, beautifully restored ancient government buildings, the Japanese love of coffee continued.

KYOTO

the best air b&b ever, the 'most beautiful street in all Japan', sake on the 35th floor, finally eating an amazing tempura dinner, Suntori factory, whiskey breakfast, a lot of rain, shelter in the awesome food market, beautiful knives, the accidental private meal at one of the best restaurants, the love of tofu growing, dango after dark, cycling on a garden mission, quite whispering of the bamboo forest, too many tourists, moss gardens, zen gardens, rock gardens, yudofu with a view, sundowner beers, Japanese French fusion, real life Geishas strolling at night, my own matcha tea ceremony lesson!

KINOSAKE ONESN

onsen onsen onsen, oversized yukatas that I insisted on wearing because it was so pretty, more ice cream, strolling the streets, amazing Ryokan meals, relaxation at its best.

OSAKA

Nearing the end, not wanting to leave, aquarium, the madness of Osaka at night, too much sake, Ross' food tour, incredible road side sushi, sashimi, trying horse sashimi, tiny fried crabs, korean bbq, takoyaki, kushikatsu, eating till we dropped.

TOYKO AGAIN

Indulgence of the most luxurious hotel I've ever stayed in, swimming on the 34th floor, shopping, incredible last ramen experience, the most amazing beef restaurant to end the last night.

Take me back to Japan. Next time Skiing! or maybe the Islands... Either way I shall be back as soon as I can!

May 2015

Tales of Isles and seafood, of bluebells and builders.

Farningham woods in May

Farningham woods in May

May was a luscious month, the sun shone and the bluebells in the woods shimmered and danced. Early may was a long weekend to the heavenly Isle of Wight with some lovely friends and my god daughter TIggy. Long dog walks to seafood lunches, lots and lots of rosé and visits to pubs around and about. I think that is my perfect idea of a holiday. It was a bit too cold to swim but that didn't deter the Bobbalina from dipping her toes on her first ever trip to the seaside.

May was also the month that we started the building works on our London flat. What started as a simple "lets just do a loft conversion" kind of job turned into a full on renovation complete with new kitchen, removal of chimneys, a roof terrace, new windows, floors and bathroom not to mention redecoration. I feel we may have bitten off a little more than we can chew. So mid May saw the whole flat being packed up into boxes. I had failed miserably to sort through anything before the movers came which has led to things like a box that is actually labelled "cupboard of crap" going into storage and the bulk of the flat being removed down to my long suffering parents in Kent. We are taking over their barn for the duration of the summer (and as it turns out most of the autumn too but that is still to come).

It was quite something to see my poor roof ripped apart ready for the new and, what will hopefully be very beautiful, bedroom!

Where the heck has 2015 gone!?

I can't believe it is the middle of September 2015 - where the heck has the year gone!? I have been neglecting my website in the most terrible manner - always meaning to restart and never quite finding the time and not knowing how to plunge back in! So - here goes..... a warp speed trip through 2015 up till now!
